Vusi Gumede is a Professor and Dean for the Faculty of Economics, Development and Business Sciences at the University of Mpumalanga. Prior to that he was a professor at University of South Africa and Director at the Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute. Before that he was an Associate Professor at the University of Johannesburg. He has also lectured public policy at the Wits School of Governance and lectured Economics at the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business where he is an Honorary Professor.
He has been a fellow for many institutions, including as a Distinguished Africanist Scholar at Cornell University and a World Fellow at Yale University and he was fellow at the Oxford University’s Center for the Study of African Economies, UNDP’s International Policy Center and the Center for the Advanced Study of African Society. He occupied various positions in the South African government before joining the academic sector. He is widely published, including 18 books and over 50 journal articles and book chapters as well as guest edited 4 special issues of journals and he has presented 67 papers in conferences. His qualifications are in economics, public policy and leadership, including a PhD in Economics. Before joining government he worked as a researcher for various institutions.
Among other things, he has been a member of the Presidential Economic Advisory Council and has been the Vice-President of the National Council of the South African Association of Political Studies as well as a member of various Editorial Boards/Committees. He has supervised to completion 8 Masters and 18 Doctoral students since joining the academic sector in 2010. He has been an external examiner for various institutions and he has undertaken numerous research projects in and outside South Africa.
