Politikon

We Publish the Scholarly journal of Politikon as well as special publications. All members should ensure their contact details are up to date to receive their copies.

Over the years Politikon has published articles by some of the world's leading political scientists, including Arend Lijphart, Samuel Huntington, and Philippe Schmitter. It has also featured important contributions from South Africa's leading political philosophers, political scientists and international relations experts. It has proved an influential journal, particularly in debates over the merits of South Africa's constitutional reforms (in 1983 and 1994).

In the last twenty years (1999 – 2019), special issues have focused on contemporary issues of political science debates such as women and politics in South Africa, the South African general elections (1999 and 2019), Africa’s relations with emerging powers, xenophobia and civil society, non-racialism in South Africa, and 40 years of political science in South Africa (2013). Others include 20 years of South African democracy from below (2014), environmental sociology, decolonization after democracy in South Africa, and security infrastructures. Broadly, articles have looked at a wide range of issues from the negotiated transition from Apartheid to democracy, aspects of identity politics in post-Apartheid South Africa and issues of democratic consolidation. Politikon regularly publishes other value adding features such as critical editorials and topical reviews, analytical book reviews, correspondence on published articles and rigorous debates on the ethical grey areas between academic freedom and academic activism in South Africa.
